Frederick II, or, better known as Frederick the Great, believed in absolute rule and having strong military power. Frederick the Great tried to push Prussia towards an absolute monarchy, however, he did things for the people that most absolute rulers would not. He felt it was necessary to have a strong military to protect the borders of his lands, some of which were in Germany and Poland, disconnected from Prussia itself.

Frederick II was a protestant, so most of Prussia was too, however, Frederick was accepting of Catholics as well. To Frederick, nationality or religion was of no concern to him, for he just wanted people to like him. Frederick wasn't what you'd expect from an absolute ruler during the 1700's. Frederick acted as a servant, and cared more about his people than himself. So Frederick started up industries, passed legal forms, increased national education, and distributed farming equipment to farmers.

Frederick the Great was also a very gifted musician. He played the flute and composed over 100 sonatas and a few symphonies with the flute. Along with his musical success, he was also multilingual. Frederick spoke French, Italian, Spanish, English, Portuguese, and understood Greek, Latin, and Hebrew. In addition to his love for music and interest in other cultures, Frederick also liked architecture. Many of which exist to this date such as the Berlin State Opera house, St. Hedwig's Cathedral (first Catholic church of Prussia), and the Sanssouci palace, all built by Frederick the Great. During his summers, Frederick would spend his time at the Sanssouci palace, built in Potsdam, present day Germany. Frederick the Great called his palace Sanssouci because it means "carefree" or "worry-free", which means he was also a laid back ruler too.
